Dogwood is pioneering a model to put control back in the hands of the public by bringing together citizens to reclaim decision-making power. The Dogwood model combines large-scale citizen engagement and recognition of Indigenous land rights with non-partisan political organizing, all of which is underscored by a commitment to continual improvement through testing and analytics.
We have an opportunity for a talented organizer to join one of the most successful organizing programs in the province. Working with our field team, you’ll be responsible for boosting and coordinating our ground game in the Okanagan/Kamloops region, before and during our Citizens’ Initiative drive. As a Dogwood Lead Organizer you would build and support local and regional volunteer leaders to sustain grassroots campaign teams who will gather signatures necessary to force citizen-led legislation protecting health and waterways from big oil projects.
Reporting to the Expansion Team Lead and working closely with staff, volunteers and Dogwood supporters in several key ridings in the the Okanagan region, the Lead Organizer will:
Coordinate recruitment and signature gathering efforts in up to 12 ridings for a citizens initiative to stop the Kinder Morgan pipeline and tanker project.
Recruit volunteer regional, riding and community coordinators
Manage volunteer recruitment and training in your assigned region
Support regional and local leaders manage several volunteer campaign teams
Ensure volunteer teams have the tools, skills, training, knowledge and materials they need to gather initiative petition signatures from 15% of registered voters in assigned ridings.
A demonstrated passion for politics, democracy and the environment.
Minimum one year of experience in grassroots organizing. Political organizing or experience with previous citizens’ initiatives a major asset
Willingness to test ideas and step outside your comfort zone.
Excellent verbal and written communications skills
Interest in training others and in leadership development.
Ability to manage complex projects and work independently remote from other Dogwood staff.
Ability to travel the region to coordinate organizing work.
Strong interpersonal skills and genuine enjoyment of people.
An entrepreneurial, proactive attitude with a focus on getting results.
Be able to develop plans with clear goals, roles, timelines and metrics.
Strong technological aptitudes and proficiencies are preferred. Previous experience using Customer Relationship Management (“CRM”) software, such as Salesforce or NationBuilder, posting to websites and social media and using mass mailer software are considerable assets but not essential.
Currently living in the general Okanagan or Kamloops region strongly preferred, but strong candidates from anywhere in the province are encouraged to apply.
The ideal candidate will be a passionate British Columbian with experience doing political, community, labour or other organizing work. You’ll need courage, tenacity and a genuine conviction that British Columbians should have the right to vote on the issues that matter most if governments aren’t representing our interests.
Dogwood Initiative offers a flexible and rewarding work environment. As an organizer, some evening and weekend work will be required.
